ELDERSBURG — More than 90 high school special education students from across the county got to be just one of the group at the third-annual Inclusion Field Day on Nov. 12 at South Carroll High School.
As a part of the county’s Learning For Independence program, special education students rotated through 10 stations where they played basketball, hockey and volleyball alongside regular education students.
John Perna, the county’s adapted physical education coordinator, introduced and coordinated the event three years ago after picking up the idea from the Baltimore County School System where he worked for more than 20 years. Influenza season is underway and county officials are urging residents, particularly the elderly and immune-compromised to get vaccinated.
Flu season generally runs between October and March, according to Debbie Middleton, communicable disease program manager for the Carroll County Health Department.
“It’s very important to get flu shots, especially in the vulnerable population, the elderly, immune-compromised, caregivers,” Middleton said. “There are thousands of deaths every year from complications from the flu. The more people that are immunized, the less transmission you will have.” (See full story) 12.NOV.08 Organizations finding more people are in need this year 12.NOV.08 Liberty doubles cast for ‘Dozen’ 12.NOV.08 Montessori School enrollment jumps this year 05.NOV.08 Breaking News 05.NOV.08 Organizations calling for coats to help area needy 05.NOV.08 Town, Scouts work together 05.NOV.08 A Wii bit of fun 05.NOV.08 WEB UPDATE: Planning Commission meeting cancelled 05.NOV.08 Zoning request gets OK from planning department 29.OCT.08 Program shows students repercussions 29.OCT.08 Ballot includes offices, slot machines, early voting 29.OCT.08 Polling Locations 2008 29.OCT.08 Sykesville debates Springfield Hospital annexation 29.OCT.08 Allegheny customers should expect rate increase soon 29.OCT.08 Correction – Oct. 29 22.OCT.08 Eldersburg students creating pirate ship 22.OCT.08 Club chairs weigh in on presidential election 22.OCT.08 Westminster author putting final touches on book 22.OCT.08 Adult education students celebrate graduations 15.OCT.08 Dogs used to improve child literacy 15.OCT.08 Survivors lend each other helping hand, shoulder to lean on 15.OCT.08 Election series: Residents sound off on issues 15.OCT.08 Youth groups having impact on some area teens
